Porsche 911
Porsche has finally revealed official images of the all-new 991 Porsche 911, prior to its full world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Costing from £71,449 and arriving in the UK this December, it is a technology-packed masterpiece concealed between the latest evolution of those classic 1963 lines.
They reveal an evolutionary design (well, you wouldn't expect anything else, would you?) but with proportions and detailing better-honed than ever before.
Porsche has codenamed the new 911 '991' and has given it more powerful flat-six boxer engines: the base 3.4-litre produces 350hp, the regular 3.8-litre producing 400hp. Both are greener too. Cleverly, the body uses a mix of aluminium in its construction, a bit like the Audi TT. This reduces weight and ensure the new 911 is even faster.
Not many posters admit to having owned or own or even driven a 911 yet most think they are experts on the marque. You know diddley.
I have owned, own, and driven dozens of 911s from 1980 and can assure all you 'experts' as a drivers car it cannot be beaten, and yes i have owned and driven lot's of cars that try to be as good.
My deposit is placed at Porsche Bolton for one of the first convertibles in the region due early summer. I will let all you wanna bs know how good it is.
Now get back in your Mondeos and dream on.![]()
Yes, James Dean died in a Porsche.
No, It was not a 911, it was actually a 550 Spider.
The 550 was more of a dedicated racer than it was a road car, and Dean had very little experience driving this car as he had just bought it. Not that it matters though, it wasn't as if he had lost control of the car; some poor guy was turning off the highway and crossed directly in to Dean's path - who was unable to stop in time to avoid his fatal accident.
As for the new 911, Front end reminds me of the Ferrari 360, and they have gone to far in streamlining.
I don't have high hopes for the performance either. I suspect it will be faster, but longer wheelbases typically do not lend themselves to cornering performance (think Lotus Exige vs. Viper).
Appears like Porsche is moving towards highway cruising comfort and away from canyon carver.
Maybe the 'Longer, Wider, Lower' manta of the American car makers of the early 70's is still too strong in my memory. Too many small and nimble-ish cars grew in gross proportions to improve ride comfort and highway stability, but did nothing but destroy cornering ability (the Mustang springs to mind; from the race dominating 67's to the land yacht 73's).
Not a welcome direction in my books.
