A good way of improving a car's fuel economy is to fit a smaller engine but only up to a point.

If the engine is overworked trying to move a car that's too heavy for it, consumption can go through the roof and reliability may suffer. That's why manufacturers are working on technologies which allow small engines to be both efficient and powerful.

Fiat has already unveiled a 900cc two-cylinder TwinAir engine (pictured) with 83hp and CO2 emissions of 92g/km when fitted to the 500 city car.
