Last week I had a Pod Point electric car charging station fitted at my home. The reason? There was a great deal to be had, plus there's an increasing need to test electric vehicles for MSN Cars. And I love future technology.
Just days after the work was completed Peugeot slashed the price of its Ion electric car to £12,055. Suddenly electric car motoring makes brilliant sense. One major hurdle - the very high purchase price - is instantly kicked into touch.

It is possible that electric cars MAY be the future, but they are certainly NOT the present. The latest advances in petrol and diesel engines are the present, although as the mpg gets higher so does the price of fuel to compensate. So where are we going, only the naive would think that the government wouldn't tax electric cars, in some way, if we all had them. Lets face it government policy is to screw the motorist till he bleeds

I tried electric cars at the Renault Z Road Show in Glasgow. The Twizy was a bit noisy, but certainly caused a deal of interest when it was going round the city streets. The model I fancied, the Clio-sized Zoe wasn't available to drive, but there was a display model.
I'd happily have an electric car because my journeys are almost always within the limits of their battery and the silence of the other Renault models I tried was just amazing.
The Peugeot mentioned here is fine, but the car looks tall and narrow on the road. I'm waiting for a Twingo-sized electric car from Renault. Now that would be perfect for me and at the prices quoted for its recharging, it's now very much cheaper than petrol or diesel.

Why spend the extra £1000 on a (totally) unnecessary 'charging station' when a standard 13A socket will almost certainly be all you need at home? A 10A charge will fill your battery from flat in 7 hours - ideal to take advantage of Eco7 tariff and this would cost about 70 whole new pence, incidentally - and your £1000 do-hicky will do the same in 4 hours. If you're asleep in bed for 8 hours anyway, what difference does it make? £1000 = 115,000 miles! (£1000/£0.70 x 80miles) That's more than the car will do in its life time!
If it was convenience you were after, you'd have been better off just getting a outdoor 13A socket with safety breaker (£20 at Toolstation) fitted on your drive, on the wall of the house. Simples! MW
