This year's Budget brought yet more misery for motorists.

The one that will affect us all is the fuel duty increase of 3.02p/litre on diesel and unleaded. This will add £1.81 to the cost of filling a Ford Focus's fuel tank when it goes into action on August 1.

Thankfully VED, or road tax rates, will only rise with inflation, but they are measured on a car's emission rating - the lower the emissions, the less you pay. Anything under 100g/km is actually free.

It's company car drivers, and those driving less environmentally friendly cars, who are hardest hit, with the top rate for company car tax rising from 35% of the car's list price to 37%.

So, we can just accept these changes and pay even more to drive, or we can all, company and personal drivers alike, do the sensible thing and slash our motoring costs in one fell swoop by switching to one of these tax-free motors.

Same old s**t make them with less pay more.
If you cant afford a new car then you get the pleasure of paying more road tax .so them who can afford it go free.

It is a pity the ministers who put up the cost of motoring don't have to pay it themselves, they get driven around in huge limo's which must use mountains of fuel and cost loads a money to tax
it's so true the rich get richer and the poor pay the cost for driving their family saloons too and from work.

I used to be a town and borough councillor til 7 years ago back then they took approx £48 billion in road tax.....spent less than £9 billion when road tax was set up it was to build, maintain and repair roads....so we get about 1/6 of what we pay for!!!! when gov wanted to get people buying diesels they cut duty below 4 star/unleaded......when it became popular they upped the price above petrol!!! now they wanna privatise roads.....take the cash in by selling off roads meaning that no one would be exempt from road tax as we will all be paying more.....soon have no family jewels to sell off more broken promises when we sold of gas, electric and water were told will be cheaper.....opposite!!! and were told this is because of competition between the companies said the monopolies commission.....oh yeah.....well how come we can't buy scottish water or W.H.Y. surely that breaks monopoly commission laws as laid down by gov and lets not forget the NHS its not free!!! we pay in thru N.I.but enough I could put down reams of BS burnt on the pyre of broken promises by goverrments........

As always its the motorist who get the bum deal, we go to work for our money but I think the government wants us all to go on the dole, as he is putting up the price of running the car that takes us to work, I'm already only just breaking even after paying for petrol when it rises again I will be better off on the dole.

for the third time I will try to post a comment. Road Tax?  Why do they call it road tax, when it is all to do with emissions.  Do these cars not use the roads. Everyone should pay either nothing or £100? minimum.  This government is bringing in private firms to build toll roads, because we can't afford to build or repair them.  What happens when we all have new cars (never happen until these new ones are old enough) and everyone is paying nothing? Like water meters, when we are all using them, the companies won't lose money, they will just increase their charges and we will finish up paying more, as usual.

So the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.Typical  Tory policy

.

But ask yourselves, who voted to get them in gorvenment.

Someone did, but of course they needed the hangers on to give them a majority

.

Clegg does'nt really agree with Cameron but wanted power at any cost.

This latest buget shows the true feelings of this government.

We pay tax on petrol/diesel and the goverment collects that we also pay tax as road fund licence so instead of paying it twice which costs double to collect and manage just pay the one tax on petrol and no road fund this way the people who use the roads the most will be contributing for the wear and tear on roads also the people who only use their cars for essentials like shopping and hospitals etc. are not hit. There should also be a set price for fuel tax for the year so that the people of England can also budget them selves.

THEY HAVE REALISED EVERYONE USES MORE DIESEL CARS, SO WHAT DO THEY DO THEY INCREASE ON THE GREATER NUMBERS OF THESE VEHICLES TAXES,

SO THEY WILL FIND ANOTHER LIEING SCHEMEING WAY TO DO IT TO ECO CARS, OR SOME OTHER CAR.

THEY ARE LIERS, THEY ARE MANIPULATERS OF HUAMN LANGUAGE, LIFE DOES NOT HAVE TO BE LIKE THIS BUT IT IS, BECAUSE OF LEADERS, AND WHAT THEY PUT IN PLACE FOR GREED AND POWER, WHY DO WE STILL TALK LIKE THEY DON,T, ENGLAND IS SOFT TOUCH AND IS BROKEN THE MORAL IS PITIFULL.

I am with every one on the excessive taxation on our vehicles with perhaps the exception of the gas guzzlers used to transport children 500 yards to school and or visit the hairdressers etc. - Non essential in my book

VED is always a puzzler to me. Older cars are hammered with quite a high rate yet they only get old because they do a relatively low annual mileage. Otherwise they would have been on the scrap heap years ago.  Thus the overall emissions are quite low, almost certainly a lot less total output than a high mileage but lower VED  'Greener' car.

The other fact is that older cars are mainly run by people on low incomes (and often in essential jobs)  or pensioners who simply do not have the funds to buy a newer vehicle. Nor can they afford to do much mileage and off course use a bit more fuel per mile - A double wammy !  So how on earth do MP's judge that to be fair ?

As already pointed out, once 'Green' car ownership takes a hold the taxes will rocket for sure. One only has to see what they have done to solar energy contributors.  Perhaps some of the VED and fuel duty could be offset if MP's paid things like stamp duty and council tax on their second homes like everyone else has to.

avatar

No, Mr Brownbill, you are incorrect. The fact is that the Conservatives introduced the fuel duty escalator before Blair's Labour government came to power in 1997 and allowed it to continue for a while and then Gordon Brown scrapped it and delivered the lowest ever fuel duty rise.

As for stealth = stealing taxes, we should complain to our MPs that VAT was only supposed to be on luxury items but they have increased the scope of VAT tremendously. Do I conclude that anything with VAT on it is not essential? Yet it is on many essential items for our civilized society such as toilet paper, toiletries, cleaning materials, all drinks including fruit juices and snacks such as chocolate, nuts and crisps. That is the worst regressive tax of all. It now looks like the poor that actually pay tax are better off under Mr Osborne with the increased personal allowances that Mr Brown failed to deliver while he had the chance. As usual there is nothing for those who are too poor to pay any income tax.

The next election ANY ( Promises ) must be set in stone, If they are not implemented within 2 years then a vote of no confidence MUST be passed , and the Party in first letter in alphabetic  order automatically comes in, You got to admit, it makes no difference who is in POWER, they first juggle their expenses then start to look around for who they can get bungs off, I can bet we still have over 600 MPs to squander OUR TAX, and the past 15 years each government has virtually GIVEN away our assets, Rail Gas Elec” Water, Next it WILL be Roads,  that will be road tax + toll + Profit for the foreign companies that own them,  so far it`s 21 miles =£5.50     ,£0.25 P/p mile , midlands to London Stick another £50.00 on your petrol cost, return journey £160.00, probably cheaper to fly, via Singapore or Air France air lines of course,

what annoy's me is if i tune up my golf mk2 so it falls in the low emission tax free bracket... i still have to tax it because its based on the manufacture's rating... yes i have to pay but road tax is there to maintain the roads... fair enough.. so if everyone bought low emission tax exempt car????s... who's paying for the roads????
