The environment has become something of a political and media obsession in recent years, spurned on by freak weather, depleting fossil fuels and increases in fuel tax.
Unsurprisingly, the car has come under a lot of scrutiny. However, environmentally-friendly motors have a distinguished history. Starting with the Stanley Steamer of 1896, we work our way through the annals of green-car history to modern-day, lightweight sports cars such as the Lotus-based Tesla Roadster as we celebrate more than a century of green motoring.
