Clark for me. One of the very few drivers who can be mentioned alongside the likes of Senna and Fangio. But we have produced plenty of other greats too, like Stewart, Moss, Mansell and Graham Hill. Even Damon Hill, I thought, was better than some people give him credit for, although he never really was a match for Schumacher.

Jim Clark, finest "natural" ever whose career was tragically cut short at German Grand Prix. A real gentleman whose modest and self effacing ways are in stark contrast to today's prima donnas. A legend of the sport.

Mike Hawthorn (pic 9) deserves a medal just for getting behind the wheel of that contraption. Modern F1 drivers don’t know they’re born. And he’s wearing a tie. Superb.

Jim Clarke, Jackie Stewart and Nigel Mansell although the latter has a nightmare personality but sometimes that's what it takes.

Guys lets not compare 30+ year old Jenson Button who's taken years to finally win a championship, does anybody recall his years at Honda - because I certainly do! Always crashing and always at the back of the grid. All you seem to hear from this guy week in, week out is complaints! Just another rich Public School boy not getting his own way! On the other hand, YES Hamilton certainly has his Ups and Downs but I think this chap makes F1 interesting, he's one of few that shows pure driving talent and always gives a thrilling performance. I think if you took Hamilton out of F1 it's be very boring. Then again, if you took Button out of F1 it would have NO impact what so ever.
In my opinion the best drivers we currently have in F1 are Hamilton, Alonso and Raikonnen!

Oh, and I thought Lewis Hamilton came from "Stevenage", not "Setevenage"!

GN (Bikkks). You're right up to a point. But neither Lewis nor Jenson came from monied backgrounds. They've achieved the ultimate through sheer talent, skill, tenacity and belief in their capabilities.

Been watching grand prix since 1954 (yes really). Nobody in that time has got anywhere near Jim Clark. He was in a class of his own.

Absolutely, Richard Potter. "Stirling" Moss, not "Sterling" Moss, as given in this list. The greatest, winnningest F1 driver never to win the championship.

Have you looked at the difference in cars Fangio Was always the only driver to win world championships & he actually stopped at one race to have a cup of tea & still won the race by a BIG margin.

Finally, Jim Clarke & Graham Hill both of these two drivers were natural talent the biggest loss was Jim Clarke.

Aryton Senna I have to give him the best of my life time & my biggest hero were in this order Fiango, Jim Clarke, Aryton Senna, Graham Hill, and Nigel Mansell.

Today's Drivers Even admit they would never have got into the car's that these men Drove & won with look alone at the Safety Record today then look at what Fiango Drove, they really were rough & tough cars to drive Today: Alonso, Lewis, Vettel, Webber, Although I am far from being a fan you must add Raikkonen, I still think Button is capable but I don't know what on earth is wrong with him at the moment.

I don't include Schumacher, Simply because his team mate had to let him win, & it was part of their contract Laughable.  I must say though he has helped the sport & safe side of racing, He would not have been able to beat Fiango in the same car's He stand's out above all to me.

To be a truly great racer your first name must begin with a J...
Jim Clark, James Hunt and the greatest of the lot Jackie Stewart are proof of this.
Jenson who?....hmmm maybe one day...

Clark (see Italian GP 1967 and Nurburgring debut of Lotus type 23) + 2 Championships, which had it not been for Lotus fragility could/would have been 4

Moss, (see Monaco 60 ,Nurburgring 61, Mille Miglia 55),

Stewart ( 3 World Championships, say no more)

Mansell (1991 Spanish & saw Senna off a few times)

Surtees, (so far only champion on 2 & 4 wheels & probably only one ever)

G Hill (Brtish GP 1960 even though he didn't finish + 5 Monaco's, Indy 500 & Le Mans)

Brooks (Belgian 1958 + Ferrari no 1 in 1959 against rear engined cars)

D Hill (dices with MS and getting the better of him and only beaten by self confessed dirty tricks in 1994 )

Hamilton (British GP in wet 2008)

Hawthorn (French GP 1953 beat Fangio in identical car, nuff said)

Peter Collins (not mentioned here but in equal equipment as good or even better than Hawthorn and nearly as good as Moss )
