WHAT DO YOU DRIVE?
I now drive a Toyota Prius. It wasn't that cheap to buy, but now I've got it, it's very cheap to run.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST CAR?
The first car that I drove was a three-and-a-half ton furniture truck, which I learned to drive in back in the 1970s, if it's possible to believe there was time that long ago.
WHAT WAS YOUR BEST/WORST CAR?
My best and worst car was a Golf R32, which was in every sense the best car I've ever driven and it was also the worst because it used so much petrol and the insurance was so high.
WHAT IS YOUR DREAM CAR?
At the moment my dream car is the Tesla Model S, which is a really nice-looking car, 100 percent electric, has a 300-mile range and charges in an hour. It puts the boot in to all the critics of electric cars, of which there are, believe me, billions.
DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF TO BE A GOOD DRIVER?
I think I'm probably quite a dull, safe driver. I've been driving for I don't know how long and I've had a couple of prangs, but they've been very small. I'm quite a careful driver.
WHAT DO YOU ALWAYS KEEP IN YOUR GLOVEBOX?
Nothing really, I think there might be a manual.
WHAT DRIVES YOU MAD BEHIND THE WHEEL?
I don't think anything does, I've had enough therapy. The thing is if you hit a traffic jam in a Prius, your engine stops and you just sit there not using any petrol.
WHAT'S THE BEST MUSIC TO DRIVE TO?
The Eagles.|
HAVE YOU EVER HAD A CRASH?
Yeah, I smashed up my girlfriend's mum's Mini when I was 19, into another car and wall in the Lake District. It was repairable, it wasn't written off, it was just really embarrassing.
WHO WOULD BE YOUR PERFECT PASSENGER?
I'd love to talk to Mahatma Gandhi. He probably wouldn't get in the car, he'd have to walk along by the side of it, and in a Prius of course it'd be silent so I could hear him.
WHAT'S THE CRAZIEST THING YOU'VE EVER DONE IN A CAR?
I drove into the sea in a Land Rover, that was stupid. It had a camera on the back, filming for a Scrapheap Challenge sequence. It was quite deep into the sea, there were waves breaking over the bonnet. I washed it down with a pressure hose and then all the disc plates looked like things that head been dredged up from Henry VIII's battleships. It still works though.
WHO CLEANS YOUR CAR AND HOW OFTEN?
I can clean my car, say once every four months. Not very often.
