One of Fiat's few success stories of recent years, the Panda first appeared in 1981 and we're about to get a new, third-generation edition. The original is still the most intriguing design though; an economy car from the old school, complete with flat glass all round.

Can't quite believe there are people who think fish and reptiles aren't animals. Probably goes some way to explain the sorry state of this world if that is the standard of intellect.

I did hear that the follow up to the Mitsubishi Colt was supposed to be called the Stallion, but it was misunderstood and hence became the Starrion.Think about it :-).

A lot of owners retro fitted the Buick / Rover V8 into stags in a bid to give them performance that matched the image.

I find it QUITE Good to name Car's after Animals!Smile

Finally! Someone who DOESN'T think Del Boy drove a Reliant Robin. Yes, it's a Regal. Supavan, if memory serves. As far as naming cars after animals is concerned, how about doing it accurately? For example, the Fiat Tortoise, or the Ford Sloth.

What about the 1930s Riley Lynx or 60s Kestrel?

steve: Triumph slag ! or stag. As you rightly say a good car soft top and hard top all rolled into one. As long as you can store the hard top when removed. The mark 2 was i thing the better modle, with less machanical problems than the mark 1.

Yes Simon Fixter, you are mistaken. That's a picture of a Reliant Robin, taken from Reliant's own brochure...

Mark,

I could have given a complete history lesson about Singer and Rootes, but I didn't want everyone to fall asleep before the end of the article. As you know, because you're an expert on these matters, Singer wasn't swallowed up by the Rootes Group until 1956. So the 1497cc engine was a Singer unit - that is, Rootes had nothing to do with its development.

However, the 1592cc engine was developed by Rootes and was seen in its other models, hence it was a Rootes engine - whereas the 1497cc unit was not. Now I could have written that in the first place, but these articles aren't intended to be history lessons - merely snapshots. Do you really want an essay for every picture, rather than merely a caption?

'Alongside the Chamois, in the 1960s Singer sold the Gazelle, which was offered in saloon, estate and convertible forms. A posh version of the Hillman Minx, the Gazelle initially came with Singer's 1497cc engine, but later editions featured Rootes' own 1592cc unit.'

The above statement - In the 60's SInger was part of the Rootes Group, along with Hillman, Sunbeam and Humber so a SInger's 1497cc engine is a Roote's engine.

Who writes these articles. Has modern journalism replaced research with hacking??
