Introduced: 1978

When Vauxhall's 1.3-litre shopping trolley had a 2.3-litre twin-cam slant-four shoehorned in the nose, it was transformed into a potent racer that was good for 120mph - or more when tuned. Just 400 were built though.

Blasts from the pasts that i am sure many of us remember or have owned one in the past,these are iconic cars that are getting rarer and rarer,my daily driver is a "J" reg st182 Toyota Celica GTi that goes like a rocket and still looks good after 20 years.If i had a chance of a new shaped car i would have to give it serious thought,they just do not do it for me.

Too bad they missed out the Toyota Starlet GT Turbo (1990-1995) - 1330cc, 133bhp, reliable, tunable, great handling. Similar to the Renault 5 Turbo and Fiat Uno Turbo, but with far better reliability.

I have owned a Skoda Fabia VRS from new and it has proved the best purchase I have made that has come with four wheels...

im glad that the golf doesnt sound or look like the pimp my ride by a 17 yr old boy racer ds3 or else it would lose its no! 1 spot as the best selling car in europe

There are plenty of cars which should be on this list, for example, MG Maestro Turbo, AC Aceca (arguably the first hot hatch ever dating from mid 1950s), Jensen Interceptor and so on. What constitutes a hot hatch? Any car with an opening rear window or a small car with a big lift up tail gate assenbly? You can argue this idea till the cows come home!

what a car mk1 gti 1.8 8v still gives the richboys a run for there money.drop a vr6 lump and box andyou gone clear,you get a ride that gives the 911 a good blow out.always gonna be someones pride and joy.thanks

GTi - the Golf defined the genre.

Have to say the Sunny/Pulsar was bonkers, but my favourite was the Lancia Delta Integrale Turbo
