All cars are safer these days, but some are safer than others. This list picks the top 10 bargain safety buys around, and proves safety and affordability needn't be mutually exclusive. Case in point is our winner: Not only is it the safest car on our list, ironically it's also the cheapest.
Euro NCAP crash reports, provided by the leading independent crash testing agency in Europe, formed the backbone of our evaluation. To come up with our final list we crunched the figures from their tests, and pondered adult and children safety as well as measures to protect pedestrians during collisions.
Not all models on this list boast a full five star rating for adult protection, but those who don't, compensated sufficiently in the other areas to warrant their spot. We also only considered passive safety equipment - measures that protect you in a collision - instead of kit which helps prevent a collision.
The results are rather surprising, with models across several segments including superminis, small family cars, MPVs, SUVs and executive saloons. And no, they aren't all Volvo's. In fact, only one Volvo snuck onto our list, and it's at number 10...
