Top 10 Used Volvos
What does Volvo mean? 'I roll' in Latin and that was originally a reference to ball bearings. One of the founders, Assar Gabrielssom, was sales manager for Swedish bearings giant SKF and the idea was to build a Swedish car specifically to cope with the tough Scandinavian climate rather than relying on American built imports.
In more recent years though Volvo gained a reputation for building hugely popular rectangular estate beloved of the British middle classes - and for representing a distinctly Scandinavian version of a premium car. Oh, and it's still here, Volvo's era of recently-ended Detroit ownership proving altogether more successful than Saab's.
I have owned three volvo's the first being my favourite the good old 240, armchair comfort and the only concession to luxury was it was automatic, plus it only cost me £300 to buy, next came the 360 a 2 ltr workhorse, which did me well but the gearchange was like 'well whichever one it goes in. and the third was a fast comfortable but troublesome 480 which forever had electrical problems.
Volvos of old were way better than volvo's of new but that can be said for most cars theses days.
