According to a recent study by the AA and Populus, British drivers still enjoy taking their cars for a spin, just for the fun of it.

The survey revealed rising petrol costs, insurance premium inflation and crowded roads don't seem to have detracted from motorists' delight in taking their vehicle out for a drive, with 55% of owners giving their car a run out purely for enjoyment.

That's great news for anyone who loves cars but feared that the joy was being sucked out of motoring and it just leaves one question. When you're out for that soul saving cruise in the country what's the best car to do it in?

Check out our gallery of the 50 greatest drivers' cars and you're sure to find one or two that get your juices flowing...

A pretty good choice of driver's cars there. And yes, the Sunday drive is being ruined lately by dawdlers, but Sunday has for decades always been known for "Sunday Drivers", it's just that there are more of them - it's a pity public transport is not more widely available for those who are just trundling from A to B.

What a boring article.

One might as well have selected the first fifty alphabetically from a car magazine, as we all knew everything the writer listed anyway.

I scrolled through the first ten, then ploughed through the rest, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Please tell me something new.

Peace.

Only one car pre 1960 and that's 1959. I'd rather have the chance to drive a 1920/30's Bugatti type 51 or Alfa 8C 2300 , or vintage Bentley than some of the stuff included here.

How could you...

You've put a picture of the 1997 Rallye instead of the 1994. Chalk and cheese. 1994 was an amazing car to drive. It begged to be thrashed so bad. The 1997 was a joke in comparison. The inclusion of the 1994 rallye in this list will raise a few eyebrows with those who haven't driven it but I can assure you, its awesome in every way.

You've done a great car a huge injustice with that pic. Shame on you.

I have driven a Nissan Skyline and a Suberu Impretza - very plastic and nothing special for the driver other than speed, where are the promised classics? The MGs and the TRs? Who would not want to drive a Rolls or a Bentley, but nothing here. This is a boy racer's list by someone who, I'd guess is no longer a boy and was never a racer.

Sure, on looking through your selection of cars you've got some real nice interesting machines in there. But I'm afraid you've just missed out too many of the great classics from the past  - Where's Carroll Shelby's AC Cobra or some of the earlier Aston's?? The Ferrari 250 & the E type will always be nothing else than real classic's, but the majority are just  expensive toys for boys with no real individuality about them - some are totally boring!!!

Not one Jaguar, then most of them would be in the frame, sounds like you have something against them.

XK8 is a Beautiful car. but you must also give credit to Mazda the MX5, what been on the market and

still going strong, more than 20 years

The new Mustang GT is definitely a drivers car. With a thumping 420 bhp V8, amazing sound track and good handling they are now just as adapt on the country roads as they are on the motorway.

There's Skyline, 350Z, Evo... what's missing?! RX-7, Honda S2000 and Supra - MkIV RZ 2JZ-GTE Twin Turbo!

* Ferrari 250 GTO

* Lamborghini Countach LP5000

* Jag XJ6

* Chevrolet Corvette C6

* pre-'70 Volkswagen Beetle

* Ferrari 288 GTO

* 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle

* Porsche Carerra GT

* Lamborghini Gallardo

I could go on forever. But those, really, are the top ones I think are missing.
