2012 BMW X1: orange, orange everywhere...

But then what do you do with them?

Arriving at BMW's Garching press garage – the starting point for pretty much every Germany-based BMW launch event – on Tuesday, you couldn't help but notice all of the facelifted X1s parked up outside. Particularly since every single one of them was finished in Valencia Orange.

This is a fine colour, and all that. But it isn't exactly shy and retiring. So at the lunch stop I couldn't help wondering what on earth BMW was going to do with all these cars after the launch had finished. X1 Product Manager Wolfram Cüppers was quick to put me straight.

Seems Germany is keen on this colour right now – it was introduced on the 1 Series M Coupé – so there would be no problem absorbing them all into the dealer network. That it would also help attract attention to the existence of the revised X1, then so much the better. Especially since this isn't the most vigorous of facelifts.

But just to make sure I really got the message, he also pointed out that the all cars on hand for the international media represent just 1/20th of daily X1 production.

I guess that makes sense, given BMW has sold nearly 300,000 of them in just two and a half years.
